The Castelo Real was totally demolished in the 18th century, following the plans
to build the Essaouira city and fortifications by Sultan
Sidi Mohammed ben Abdallah in the 18th century.

In 1506, the king
of Portugal, D. Manuel I ordered a fortress to be built in Mogador,
named "Castelo Real de Mogador" ( Château Royal, Royal Castle
)
It was located on a small island in front of Dzira Sghira , which currently covers the west pier of the port of Essaouira. The fort had an approximate size of 40 by 30 meters.
